Cleaning Wooden Floors the Right Way

Wooden floors are beautiful. They lend a warm and refined charm to any room. Unlike vinyl or linoleum, wood is a natural material, requiring special care to maintain its natural lustre. This article explains how best to clean wooden floors and avoid potential damage.

Do's and Don'ts of Cleaning Wooden Floors 1. Do's and Don'ts of Cleaning Wooden Floors

Wooden floors come in many varieties, colours and finishes. Depending on the varnish and hardness of the wood, some floors are more sensitive to scratches or stains than others. If you pay attention to the special demands of wood you can maintain beautiful flooring for a long time. Excess water and spills can cause permanent stains. You should therefore remove any wet spills right away and thoroughly dry the area. If the varnish is ruined by too much water, consider fixing it as soon as possible for it tends to get worse with time. Another thing to remember: don’t move furniture or heavy objects across the floor; carry them properly or use gliding furniture pads instead. Furniture pads under table and chair legs further reduce the risk of scratches. For chairs there are even small "leg socks" available. If possible don’t wear high heels; they might dent the floor. Or use carpets in highly frequented areas to minimise the risk of potential damage. However, when using a carpet the wood below the carpet will be affected differently compared to areas of the floor that receive direct day light. This is caused by the impact of ultraviolet radiation in natural light.

Regular cleaning is essential for maintaining the beauty of your wooden floors. Sweep or dust your floors at least once a week with a soft bristle broom. Spills and tracked-in dirt should be cleaned right away, that way you are able to avoid scratching by dirt, grit or sand. When vacuuming use a soft brush attachment. For wet cleaning, flat mops are the tool of choice. We recommend a slightly damp mop to prevent excess water from seeping into the wood and seams. There seem to be big differences in the way different nationalities approach these cleaning issues. For example in Sweden, people use a trigger spray to slightly moisten the pad of their flat mops. In Germany people tend to dip the pad of their mops in water and rinse it, consequently the pad is much wetter. Try the Swedish method in combination with a Microfibre Flat Mop Pad - this works well. Also, avoid prolonged contact with the floor. If necessary, dry afterwards with a soft cloth. Do you need to get rid of hardened candle wax? First soften the wax with a blow dryer, then wipe away with a cloth. Ink stains can be removed with a thin layer of toothpaste. Afterwards clean with a water and vinegar mixture. You want to use a new detergent but are unsure how it affects the surface? Use it on a small inconspicuous area first and see how it turns out. Some floors require regular waxing or polishing. Ask the manufacturer about the best cleaning and care procedures.

Finally, we receive a great deal of questions about the use of Microfibre on wooden floors. People are uncertain whether they can use it safely or whether it removes layers of the floor. Extensive long term studies examining this issue, undertaken in cooperation with our floor specialist partners HARO and TARKETT, have shown that this is a perfectly safe procedure and there are no negative side effects.

Vileda Products for Wooden Floors 3. Vileda Products for Wooden Floors

Vileda offers a range of products which can be used on delicate materials such as wooden floors. The DuActiva Broom and the Superfeger Parquet Broom are ideal for sweeping up dust and particles. Their soft foam ensures constant, close contact with the floor and hinders dust from billowing up behind the broom. The Vileda AttrActive Dust Catching System uses electro-static principles to literally ‘attract’ the dust up into the broom and traps it there. It is particularly suited to cleaning fine dust in a gentle manner without kicking up clouds of dust. The WischMat Extra and Active Max cleaning system are ideal for hardwood as well as marble, vinyl and tile floors. The telescopic handle and swivel head help you clean hard to reach places. The CollecTex material picks up 25% more dirt and the Microfibres ensures a thorough clean. The outer layers of absorbent lamellas soak up any excess moisture protecting the floor from water damage. After use, the pad can be rinsed and wrung out in the specially designed bucket and wringer, keeping your hands dry and clean at the same time. The WischMat Combi can be used either wet or dry, its soft meshed tassels and Microfibre stripes gather up any dirt particles. The mops soft structure makes it easy to wring it out when cleaning with water.
